"We were looking for an Alaskan experience a bit off the beaten path for our first family trip (grandparents and kid) to Alaska and found it at Alaska’s Ridgewood Wilderness Lodge. A true gem tucked away in beautiful southwest Alaska. We were looking for a similar experience to our hiking vacation in Scotland. We were not disappointed! We flew into Anchorage and got to spend a day at the Anchorage Museum and The Alaska Native Heritage Center. where we learned about Alaskan history and native cultures. We rented a car and had a scenic drive (saw 4 Moose) to Homer, Alaska where we took a 30 min water taxi to Halibut Cove. Kevin greeted us at the dock and drove us with our luggage in a utility vehicle up to the lodge where we were greeted by his wife Lucinda. The lodge itself is impeccable. The couple have lived in Halibut Cove for over 45 years and are an authentic example of Alaskan self reliance. It was like visiting family and catching up on the news of the island. They planned our activities and provided home cooked meals for the 3 full days we were there and knew all the guides personally. We were treated to a boat ride by Captain Dave who took us into fjords where we looked for seals, identified birds we had never seen, saw mountain goats, and fed Eagles! Halfway through our tour we stopped on a small island, built a fire and had a hearty lunch packed by Lucinda. The 2nd day, a local guide from 3 Moose Kayaking & Cabins took us on a hike in the state park across from Halibut Cove, at our destination we took kayaks over to get a closer look at the glacier and have lunch on the beach. A spectacular view. The 3rd day we stayed on the island and Kevin gave us a personal tour sharing his intimate knowledge about the island, its inhabitants and oyster farming. We marveled at the tides, explored tide pools, stopped by the coffee shop for a cup and had a delicious lunch of local cuisine at the Saltry, the only restaurant on the island. Truly the best oysters I have ever tasted, ever. Before we left, we made sure we had the recipes for some of the dishes Lucinda made so we could recreate our experience at home. We are looking forward to returning to Ridgewood Lodge to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, spectacular views, wonderful food, hiking, exploring by boat and bear viewing!"
