75 years ago today, on December 18, 1950 Decca released Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys' original version of "Uncle Pen". James Pendleton "Pen" Vandiver was the real-life uncle and musical mentor to bluegrass legend Bill Monroe. After Monroe's parents died, Pen, a talented old-time fiddler in Rosine, Kentucky, raised him and taught him music, playing at local dances while young Bill backed him on mandolin, shaping the sound of bluegrass itself. | GatorRock
