In January 2011, a wave of popular protests spread across the Middle East and North Africa, which became widely known as the 'Arab Spring'. Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria saw the most changes, from free elections, dictators standing down to armed insurrections.
